Breaking Barriers in Education: Kay Leslie’s Impactful Leadership

In a world where education systems across the globe continue to face a multitude of challenges, Kay, the CEO of Uplift Learning, is leading a transformation in how students learn and how they are equipped with the necessary tools to thrive academically and beyond. Inspired by her personal experience in school, Kay’s journey toward founding Uplift Learning began with a simple yet profound realization: “I didn’t know how to study when I was in school. I struggled with some of the basic concepts that, looking back now, would have made such a difference.”

That personal connection to the struggle of understanding how to learn motivated Kay to create Uplift Learning, a company dedicated to equipping students with practical skills that go beyond traditional academic instruction. “What started out as one course has now grown to meet a variety of needs, from helping students with exam anxiety to supporting parents in learning how to help their kids study,” she reflects.

Redefining the Learning Experience in South Africa

In South Africa, where many students face systemic challenges, Uplift Learning’s mission is clear: to make education accessible, impactful, and relevant. “Our courses are designed to be practical, accessible, and affordable. For example, our How to Study course helps students improve their grades by up to 30%, which is huge, especially in a country where every percentage point counts,” says Kay.

This approach has proven especially critical in rural areas where overcrowded classrooms and limited resources can often leave students without the necessary academic support. Kay and her team have found innovative ways to bridge these gaps, ensuring that no student is left behind. “We’re able to step in where there’s a gap, helping both students and teachers with practical strategies they can use right away,” she explains.

Addressing Educational Gaps and Workforce Readiness

One of the key challenges Kay identifies within traditional education is the absence of crucial study skills, time management, goal setting, and effective learning techniques. “Students are taught what to learn, but not how to learn. That’s where we come in,” she says, emphasizing how Uplift Learning’s courses help students not only improve academically but also develop skills that are vital for their futures.

As a leader, Kay has been intentional in ensuring that both students and their parents are supported through Uplift Learning’s resources. “We recognize that parents are a critical part of the equation. That’s why we’ve created a suite of resources to help them support their kids,” says Kay. This comprehensive, collaborative approach empowers families to stay engaged and actively contribute to the academic success of their children.

Technology’s Role in Education Transformation

While Uplift Learning’s primary focus remains on practical, hands-on teaching methods, technology has played an important role in extending their reach. “While technology does play a role in expanding our reach, especially through platforms like Zoom and Teams, our approach is designed to be as flexible as possible,” Kay explains. Even in rural areas with limited access to the internet, Uplift Learning adapts their strategies to ensure no student is excluded.

Kay recalls a particularly impactful success story from the pandemic. “One of my most rewarding experiences was working with a Grade 9 student during the pandemic. He had lost all motivation and struggled with isolation. His dad reached out for help, and we started working together on study skills and confidence-building. By the end of the program, the student’s grades had improved, but more importantly, his attitude toward school and his enthusiasm for learning were completely transformed.” This personalized, student-centered approach remains the cornerstone of Uplift Learning’s success.

Fostering Innovation Within Uplift Learning

At the heart of Uplift Learning’s continuous growth and development lies a culture of innovation and collaboration. “Innovation doesn’t always mean reinventing the wheel; sometimes, it’s about finding new ways to use what we already have,” says Kay. Through constant feedback and open dialogue with students, parents, and educators, Uplift Learning’s team is able to create relevant and effective educational solutions.

Kay’s leadership style, one that is supportive and collaborative, has fostered a culture where team members feel empowered to share ideas and contribute to the company’s mission. “We encourage everyone to suggest improvements or new ideas. One of our most successful courses came from a team discussion about how to help students manage exam anxiety,” she shares, illustrating the power of collective innovation.

“Students are taught what to learn, but not how to learn. That’s where we come in.”

Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future of Education

Looking ahead, Kay is determined to continue advocating for a transformative approach to education in South Africa. “I envision an education system where every student, no matter their background, has the tools and support they need to succeed. Education is more than just academic knowledge; it’s about building confidence, critical thinking skills, and a lifelong love of learning,” she reflects.

Her mission remains focused on providing students with not only the academic skills they need to succeed but the confidence to break through barriers and create lasting change. “Education is the key to unlocking potential and creating lasting change. And that’s what drives us every day—to help every student discover their own power and possibility.”
